“Being Black in the wilderness is an idea I’ve been trying to chase down or play with for a long time. I wrote a book of field notes and took photographs, and made drawings. A lot of it was trying to hear my own voice and understand what that meant—to hear one’s own voice in wild spaces. What does a Black man sound like in the wilderness, versus the voice of John Muir or Ernest Hemingway? “

In the remote Oregon-Idaho border, the stunning Owyhee Canyonlands became the backdrop for five visionary Black leaders on a transformative journey to deepen their connection to nature and commit to environmental advocacy and racial equity. As they explored the pristine landscapes, they were inspired by the rich history and pressing contemporary challenges.
This dynamic group of entrepreneurs, activists, influencers, and artists aimed to bond with the land and return to their communities as change agents. Their adventure began with rafting the Owyhee River, where they recognized the sacred insights the wilderness offered about their identities and responsibilities.
Guided by local experts, they navigated rugged trails and camped in the canyons, witnessing diverse ecosystems and drawing inspiration from nature’s resilience. Important discussions arose about the links between environmental degradation and racial injustice, highlighting the environmental racism faced by many Black communities.
Motivated by their experiences, they pledged to advocate for environmental preservation and racial justice through community workshops, articles, and public speaking, amplifying the voices of those affected by ecological harm.
